How To: Link Structure, 301 Redirects, & Canonical URLs
Problems:
- 1.) Search Engines hate duplicate content and penalize your SEO Ranking because of it.
- 2.) Search Engines think http://yourdomain.com and http://www.yourdomain.com are different websites with identical content.
Solutions:
- 1.) Internal Link Structure – For a new website this is crucial. Make sure to stay consistent on how you link throughout your site. Always stick to either a www or non www format. It’s also good practice to choose a format with or without a trailing slash for each link (yourdomain.com VS yourdomain.com/), though Matt Cutts has stated in an interview that Google has become very good at looking past this discrepancy.
- 2.) 301 Redirects – 301 redirects are hands down the best way to tackle this linking problem. For our website the redirect states that anytime someone tries to enter the site using http://synactable.com it will immediately reroute them to the site http://www.synactable.com. Search Engines also see this redirect and credit any incoming links to the right page. The only downside is you need to have access to your server in order to accomplish it.

- 3.) Canonical URLs – This is the poor-man’s 301. It’s a link coded into the head tag of a webpage that acts like a flag to search engines to let them know which URL structure should be used.

- 4.) Webmaster Tools – Most search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing have Webmaster tools. These tools are a great medium between webmasters and search engines. Google has a specific place to declare if you would like the www or non www to be the URL used.

- 5.) Sitemaps – Make sure to submit an updated xml formatted sitemap to each. This will let the search engines know what pages to look for and how you prefer the URL to be seen. The easiest way to create an xml sitemap is through a free sitemap generator.
How To: Link Building
Link Building is the bread and butter of SEO. If you truly want to skyrocket to the top of your favorite Google keyword you will have to receive links to your site from other credible sources. This shows search engines that other people consider your information valuable.
Bad Habits:
- 1.) Too Many Directories – Submitting your website to thousands of online directories is time consuming and rarely worth it. There are only a handful of directories like Yahoo’s and DMOZ that are really worth the effort.
- 2.) Buying Links – This is trying to cheat the system and it will quickly end with you in Google’s doghouse.
- 3.) Reciprocal Links – “I’ll link to you if you link to me” sounds great in theory, but search engines account for it. The links aren’t completely discredited, but they are severely devalued.
Good Habits:
- 1.) Guest Post – Guest post on a well known industry blog. Though it’s never fun giving away a piece of your work, it’s a great way to tap into another audience and create a quality backlink to your website.
- 2.) Comment on Blogs – Most blogs have an area to enter a website when you comment on a post. Make sure you add an article or website that is relevant to both the post and your comment, or you risk looking like a spammer. Even blogs that nofollow their links can still help drive traffic to your site, and more traffic leads to more links.
- 3.) Social Media – Use your network to help expand your reach. Let everyone know what you’re doing and why it’s useful. It’s very likely they’ll continue to pass on the word to their friends.
- 4.) Create Valuable Content – In the end this is the number one way to gain links. If you create worthwhile content people will love linking to it and search engines will love crawling it.
How To: Anchor Text
Anchor Text – When you link from one article to another on your site the anchor text is vital. Anchor text is the word/words that normally become highlighted and underlined to signal a link. (This is Anchor Text) These tell search engines what to expect on the page being linked to.
Bad Habits:
- 1.) External Keywords – If you have a page that you want to rank high for the term “SEO” then make sure not to include the term “SEO” in anchor text pointing to other sites. This tells search engines that the site you’ve linked to is the authority for that term.
- 2.) Internal Keyword Confusion – Even linking to other pages on your own site with your currently targeted keywords can hurt rankings. Search engines become confused at which page should rank for that keyword. This will inevitably hurt the ranking of both pages.
Good Habits:
- 1.) Content Blocks – Search engines read more than just the anchor text. They also read the text that is immediately surrounding the link to see if it is relevant. It is best to link out to a page that is relevant to the anchor text as well as the surrounding information to enable the maximum benefit.
- 2.) Alt Attribute – If you use a picture as a link to another page it is important to realize that the Alt Attribute for that picture will then becomes the anchor text for that link.

This may seem like an abundance of information but it really just scratches the surface. If you’re left with nothing else, make sure to remember that
Good Content = Good Rankings.

Great post! How do 301 redirects work with keyboard shortcuts such as my favorite ‘CTRL + Enter’ to get to a website? In most instances I’m successful with this command, but sometimes instead of being redirected, I’ll hit a dead end. Is that more likely than not an issue on the site’s backend?
E.g. typing: ‘synactable’ into the URL field followed by hitting ‘CTRL + Enter’ and either being taken to the site or receiving an error.
Thanks Shannon. Hitting ‘CTRL + Enter’ is a call to your browser to add ‘http://www.’ before the word you typed and ‘.com’ after the word. This all happens before the browser makes a call to pull information off of the server. The only reason you would receive an error page is if the redirect was not set up properly either for the www or a trailing slash issue. The easiest way to check is to manually type in the website with www and see if you receive the same error.
Another issue could be if it is a .org or .net address. In this case use the shortcut ‘Shift + Enter’ for .net or ‘CTRL + Shift + Enter’ for .org. These shortcuts work great for most current browsers, but may not be recognized by some older versions.
A lot of people don't get the part about http://www.whateveryourdomainis.com and just plain whateveryourdomainis.com being separate pages in the eyes of Google. In fact an awful lot of older business websites that I have looked at and domains that I have looked at purchasing had their incoming links split between the two of them. I tell people that they would benefit a great deal by doing a 301 redirect, but it usually doesn't sink in.
My recent post Why Do Some Sites Use A Combination Of Nofollow and dofollow
I see the same thing happen all the time. Many people don't realize that allowing incoming links to be split down the middle is basically shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to SEO. Most of the time it can be completely solved by about three lines of code in the .htaccess file. Thanks for the comment Kathy!
I still don't understand why Google, being so smart and all, still insists on thinking that a site called http://www.domainx.com/ and one called http://domainx.com/ are two different sites when even the dumbest of surfers know that typing any of the two phrases will still bring him to one and the same site.
My recent post Automatic Photo Scanner Picks
Surprisingly the reason behind it is because a domain can technically be set up in a way that the www version and the non-www version actually do take you to two different sites. 99% of websites don't do this, (because it doesn't make any sense) but since it is possible and is also not considered a "black hat technique", search engines are forced to look at them one at a time. Crazy, I know…but true.
I had always used & marketed my site without the www to help the users type less in the address bar. But I would like to know if using the www instead would help better in SEO rankings. This would greatly benefit my future site building efforts.
Thanks for a great tutorial!

There's actually no favored difference between the www and non www version of a website in terms of SEO. It all comes down to personal preference and branding purposes. The only thing that is important is whichever one you do decide to choose, make sure to have the other version 301 redirected to it.
Definitely enjoyed the post, Brian. Love your blogging style, very well organized and easy to read.
One more addition regarding anchor text: when you build links to your site using anchor text, it's imperative to make sure that your anchor text looks natural. Meaning, so do not "SEO" for all your anchor text – SEs will know that you are doing SEO and will penalize you for that. Rather make it look more natural by adding a few different words here and there.
Thanks,
Ana Hoffman
PS Noticed your permalink structure – wow! Looks wordy:)

Thanks Ana, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
You make a really great point about diversifying word use in anchor text. This is a very important concept to remember when working on internal linking. It is also something to keep in mind when commenting on blogs, linking on social media sites, and writing guest posts.
Haha you caught me on the permalink structure. It definitely is a little wordy. I will actually be revising the permalink post structure this upcoming week.
Great post Brian! You nailed it! I like the way you keep it simple for the audience, no hard rocket science and elaborating each and everything very clearly..! I'm surely your regular fan/follower from now onwards
You wrote above in 'Link Building' that Reciprocal Links won't work, even if we post them as ads ? I mean if he puts my banner on his home page and i paste his banner? Or is this something else ?
Thanks!
I'm glad you enjoyed the post and happy to hear you'll be regularly stopping by to read our new articles. Let us know if there's anything in the industry that particularly interests you and we'll try to put together a write up on it.
Reciprocal links and ads are almost on two separate spectrums. In Google's mindset (along with most search engines) Ads shouldn't pass any PageRank or link juice at all. This is because many people have been known to build up their personal PageRank and then use it as the major selling point for advertisements. This leads to companies having the ability to purchase a quality website ranking regardless of their content. Now search engines have become very good at discrediting these links all together regardless of if the webmaster adds a nofollow tag to the link structure or not.
Reciprocal links are not particularly harmful because they happen all the time. Link juice and PageRank can/will still pass between the sites. Search engines will however devalue them in the amount that is passed since they are able to tell that the links are reciprocal. If it comes to a reciprocal link or nothing at all, always go with the link…it's just not the best overall linking strategy to implement in the long run.
I like how you presented the discussion. As we all know, not all of this points are followed by many webmasters (as they describe themselves). I also agree with the use of webmaster tools since everyone is working for a particular search engine, so why not utilizing the webmaster tools offered by different search engine.
Thanks Cole, using webmaster tools from the big three search engines is very important. I have found that many times individual page URLs need to be submitted to Bing in order for them to be found and indexed. It is also important to track where links are coming from, what pages they point at, and what anchor text is being used. The last thing you want is for your important pages to fall into Google's supplemental index.
I am finding this post late but better than never. Thanks Brian once again for some great information. I never knew that http://www.yoursite.com and yoursite.com were viewed as two separate sites. As I am reading this I have opened up my editor and did it the Poor man's way. I am having to save this to come back to as I want to continue learning more about backlinks and anchors. I think I have learned more on this site than I have on the last couple ones put together. Continue on with keeping the Blogosphere informed with actual information we can use.
Hi Karen, The article was only posted about a month ago so it is still pretty recent. It's great to hear that you are interested in anchor text and backlinks. There is definitely a ton of information to try and absorb. If you have any questions at all I'm always happy to help. Thank you for the flattering compliment about the website. We try to write information that is easy to follow and actually usable, so it really means a lot to hear that you are finding it so useful.
A mutual buddy stated I should arrive take a have a look at your website. Glad I clicked on the link! I like how you truly focus and get towards the bottom line but can you run via that final part again? Just a little?
I'd be happy to. Which section did you want me to expand on?
your post is very informative! didn't know about web-master tools!
Webmaster tools are extremely helpful. I would focus on using Google's and Bing's. Yahoo's site explorer lost a certain amount of importance once Bing took over 100% of their SERPs.
In my case i used both the webmaster tools and 301 redirect to solve my URL issues. But my question is im not sure if using both had made it more effective or not. I hope someone out there got an idea
i guess that is a better idea but im not sure though
You have the right idea. I actually use all three. I use 301 redirects, webmaster tools, and canonical URLs. 301 redirects and webmaster tools are great for solving the www and non www issue that comes up. The problem is it won't solve the duplicate content issue created from running a blog.
With blogs you will inherently have category pages, tag pages, comment pages, author pages, etc. Each of these will be holding duplicates of your original content. Using 301 redirects won't help because you want people to be able to use these pages without being sent immediately back to the your post. The only way tho fix this issue is to use canonical URLs to let search engines know that you are aware of these pages, but any links to them should be credited to the original post.
Anchor Text Text and Link Building is always hardest for me. I like your "good and bad" habit way of explaining it. At least from one look I know what to avoid.
Hi Brian, thank you for taking the time to reply. As you can see from my site, I am not a technical person and your explanation is really an easy way for me to start the SEO for my site. Thanks
My recent post Daily Feng Shui Calendar- 25 November 2010
thanks for sharing this, i was about to put anchor text with same keyword to 3 pages of my site but now i will not do them at all.
Great post ..Mrs.Brain i read about the Link Building and i learn now how to comment in the Website..and i like to learn more but its long period of time …thanks i will read more about this
you suggest: "If you have a page that you want to rank high for the term “SEO” then make sure not to include the term “SEO” in anchor text pointing to other sites. This tells search engines that the site you’ve linked to is the authority for that term."
so if I get this right I shouldn't use my keywords to link out from my landing pages?
It's a little strange because many factual sites, wikipedia pages, hubpages have lots of external links to other authority sites. I thought if you link to trustworthy high authority sites that will help with your ranking not hurt them.
would you ellaborate a little on why you think using your keywords linking out is bad?
thanks.

Blog commenting and social media are my favorite link building strategies.
Brilliant! Internal linking can affect your search ranking. At times we cause problems to search engine as knowing which pages matter most to us. You 're right on that.
What about rel canonical this will replace 301
Personally I think commenting on blogs is a great way to build links and make good contacts with other people inside the business.
I am so glad that there are wordpress pugins that take care of all that sort of redirect stuff – I understand it's important but really don't get the tech stuff. It's a bit like my car – I like to keep it running smoothly but really don't know what goes on under the bonnet.

Awesome post and very informative. Webmaster tools and sitemap really made me interested since had yet done any. Would you think I would still need to make these? My site had been more than a year old and already indexed in all Search Engines. Just wondering if they would still make a big difference for an already old site. Thanks!

Very informative post. It is sad to hear that people buy links up to now so that their sites can rank higher. This is cheating and it is good that search engines have a way of dealing with this once they find out. If you have a site then you have to work hard in order to get it to rank higher. The trips you have given on writing good content and commenting among others can be of great help.
